When I move my cursor over an object my cursor shows a symbol. Why?

This is because Snap is enabled in the Tools menu. The symbols indicate a location on the object you are passing over. They are used to accurately locate a specific part of an object. This may be the mid point, end point, center, or other points of the object. This function can be turned off by pressing F11 or by unselecting it from the Tools menu.
