The regenerate box was checked on the roof, yet when I make a change to the floor plan I have to re-check the regenerate box to have the change implemented. Is this the correct way to approach regeneration?

Yes. The regenerate box will only enable when a change is made to the roof. This allows multiple changes to be made in other modes of the drawing then have one regenerate adjust all of the roof changes.
