Version 14 Tool You May Have Missed: "SoftList Takeoff Highlight Tool"
Most SoftPlan users are familiar with the fact that drawing files from other CAD applications can be imported into SoftPlan, in a DWG for a DXF format. Once imported, the file is represented with simple lines rather than the complex objects that can be drawn in SoftPlan. What may not be known is that with minimal set-up, material quantities can be derived from these drawings using Takeoff Highlighters drawn in SoftList Mode.
The following steps will take you through the process of how to create a material estimate once the drawing has been imported as a CAD file. Note that these same steps could be applied to an import of a.JPEG or .PDF file.

|
From the Mode selector, switch to SoftList Mode.
1.
Select Draw, Takeoff. A list of pre-defined Takeoff Highlighters will appear.
2.
Takeoff Highlighters can be defined as both Narrow and Wide, and color-coded.
3.
For easy identification, these highlighters can also be renamed.
|
|
Assume for a moment that it was desired to estimate the amount of siding on the exterior walls.
4.
Simply select one of the existing Narrow Highlighters.
5.
Under the Draw Polygon Method, select Manual Trace and proceed to trace the lines that represent the outside edge of the exterior walls.
Hint: Using the Cursor Snap (F11) will ensure a quick and accurate trace.
If a full polygon is traced, the trace lines will automatically end. If a partial polygon is required, select the right mouse button to end the trace line. |
|
 |
|
6. Using Edit Item, the Take Off item can be selected and the Material Thickness as well as Height can be specified. |
|
 |
|
7. Save the drawings.
8.
Select Build, Assemble Floors, and assemble the drawing into the Current List.
9.
Select OK. From the Build menu, select Material List, Take-Off Types.
10.
SoftList will generate a report listing information such as the square footage of Siding (Blue Highlighter) needed. |
